How to Eat Well during the Holidays

This time every year clients start sharing their concerns about eating during the holidays.  It’s assumed that we will overindulge, feel unwell and gain weight during the holidays.  But this doesn’t have to be true.  As I talk more with my clients they see that they can enjoy holiday treats and still feel good.  Here are a few of the things that often come up.

Stay conscious of how much you’re eating

At holiday parties it’s easy to graze and lose track of how much you’re actually eating.  Instead of grazing, get a plate and take some of everything you’d like to try.  Sit down and eat it mindfully as you visit with friends and family.  You’ll not only eat less, but you’ll enjoy your food more.

Eat vegetables

Bring some vegetable dishes to your holiday parties. There are plenty of delicious online recipes.  Just browse this recipe gallery from the Food Network!

 Don’t skip meals

Like any other day, it is important to eat breakfast, lunch and dinner during the holidays. Not doing so will result in a slowed metabolism and overeating. Instead of opting to skip meals, have  a healthy high protein breakfast and a light lunch.

Be conscious of what you’re drinking as well

Don’t forget that beverages can be high in sugar. Eggnog, for example, has 21 grams of sugar per serving!

Go for a walk

Instead of falling into a food coma, take a gentle stroll. A short walk after a big meal helps with digestion and energy.
